There is a saying which is often at the tip of our tongue: “With friends like these, who needs enemies?” Which is to say there are times when friends do seem to behave like our worst enemies.

But at times, the reverse could be equally true: with enemies like these who needs friends!

Let me hasten to say that I don’t consider those with whom I may disagree politically as my enemies. If there are no two teams, you won’t have a football match. If there are not at least two sides, we won’t have an elections.

But the current situation in our country seems to border on the ludicrous or the ridiculous. Or at least to us plain citizens, politicians do seem to say the darndest things. This is not to say it happens only in our country (please consult http://officialssay.tumblr.com).

This would border on the comical IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE FACT THAT THE SUBJECT BEING ADDRESSED ARE OF THE HIGHEST ESSENCE OF WHAT AND WHO WE ARE AS A NATION!

But what are we plain citizens to think when one of the first things the prime minister said after our recent general elections was something about … tsunami. And no sooner than he was appointed, the new home minister actually said that those who are not not satisfied with the country’s electoral system should migrate elsewhere. Mr Minister, my father was born here. Yes I admit that I did not vote for your team and yes I was not and still am not happy with the electoral system nor indeed the way the recent general elections was conducted nor, for that matter, the electoral roll. Should I book a ticket on the slow boat to …?

And here’s the point, the haste in which some people have urged the country to move on is simply not a fabulous option. I would really want to move on quite frankly. That would really suit me just fine. But how may I move on when the highest officials are saying such things? Is anybody in charge there? Shouldn’t there be an urgent meeting whereby the powers that be get a grip on themselves and get their act together?

Certain things did happen during the country’s recent elections. Some serious questions need to be faced up to. Some properly considered answers are due to loyal citizens. For the sake of the powers that be – for their own sake – start treating the citizens with respect and dignity.

Don’t you want to know what many Malaysians – including your own prospective voters – would want to know? Like for example:

Who is organising these daily flights from Sabah and Sarawak bringing – in the eyes and ears of many of us – mysterious ‘voters’ into the semenanjung on the eve of the country’s general elections?

Is this a purely private initiative or does it involve government departments and under (the care-taker) government’s directions?

Who is paying for this (that is, if it is really not tax-payers money)? And if only private donors were involved, were these generous donors doing it out of a goodness of heart and not on a “You help me, I help you” formula?

Are you comfortable about the lack of transparency in this operation (seeing that the country is not at war and elections is in fact a peace-time exercise neither involving nor risking national secrets)?

Do you think – unlike many Malaysians – that this operation does not in any way contravene some law or protocol or at the very least the sense of fair play?

Who actually are these specially-flown in people? Just bona fide Malaysian citizens with not a single foreigner? And why just them and not all other voters who need to return from Sabah and Sarawak to cast their vote in the semenanjung?

Are they in fact all eligible and registered to vote? And in which constituencies?

Do you yourselves believe this is above board and therefore poses no threat whatsoever to the integrity of this elections? (Or is it because you would incur the wrath of the powers that be in Umno-Bn should you ask questions as many of your fellow Malaysians do?)

Are you REALLY and TRULY okay with this (which is but one of numerous other issues pertaining to integrity and transparency that many of us are concerned about)?

If you are absolutely okay with this, should you be declared the winner of the seat that you are contesting and it is subsequently found that there were in fact illegitimate ‘voters’ in substantial numbers who cast votes in the coming general elections and thus compromise the very integrity of the general elections, will you now give assurance that you will resign for the sake of your honour and your country’s honour rather than serve under a cloud?

In other words – especially those of you who are personal friends with me – will you help bring credence and honour to our country’s electoral process? And while at this, will you help restore integrity, transparency and justice to our country and its governance?

Thank you kindly for taking time off your respective campaigns to read, think and pray about these concerns over which this simple, greying and anxious person is on his knees to GOD – seeking justice and righteousness from GOD ALMIGHTY. For “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of thy throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before thee.” (Psalm 89:14, The Holy Bible)

People, if like me you also received an email entitled: “Tian Chua Roughened Up and Manhandled in Sabah: that is why we are voting for PR!”, PLEASE READ THIS CONVERSATION between TC and me:

GKP: “Can you verify that this was what happened at KK Airport, please? Goh”
TC: “It’s a fake – maybe a parody.”
GKP: “Thank you. I thought so. The other side may use this fake doctored picture against you. Better if you put out a short statement that you were turned back but not this way.”

I believe the main picture was real enough to be sure but from another incident involving Tian and, in this case, was superimposed onto another setting (that of the airport tarmac and as though taken by a passenger from inside the plane).

For sure many, like myself, have been understandably outraged by TC’s denial of entrance into Sabah, on top of the many other countless incidents of clear heavy-handedness of the enforcement authorities on non-UMNO-BN political personages including those who are elected representatives with orders from their higher-ups.

But this particular picture was doctored completely without TC’s involvement or knowledge. People, we have more than enough reasons why we cannot vote for the sitting government at federal level and in states where they govern. WE DON’T NEED TO INVENT anything else. These people have done enough on their own to disqualify them from being given any further extension or opportunity to lord it over us …

Postscript: If we could be fooled by this doctored photograph and mistake it for the real thing, then we can imagine how many more people were and could be fooled by doctored pictures and videos manufactured by the other side to smear their political rivals.

As I had written in my blog years back: “Winning is Glorious only if you Play by the Rules” (www.ongohing.com)

Taking advantage of and abusing one’s rank to cut corners, demand and receive, plunder and steal, assault and pilfer, lie and cheat, bully and persecute with impunity is despicable, disgraceful, shameful and immoral. The notion that only the lower-ranked (in a society that accords such arbitrary ranking to its people) are liable for their misconduct, and that leniency or penalty is dispensed according to rank rather than the actual nature or weight of the crime, is a travesty of justice. It shames a nation and emboldens perpetrators of so-called white-collar crime..” (From Chapter One in A PEOPLE’S POLITICS.)
